1-2 Newyear 721 IA

Saving Phon from Her Attackers and Maybe Herself...

It’s evening on the first of the new year, overcast and raining.  The party is patrolling late at night in Midtown, near Delver’s Square.  We hear a woman scream.  The party runs to respond.  An attacker punches her down and he has accomplices.  Dar runs all the way to the woman to save her as the rest of the party attacks the gang.   Crow swings a battle axe Jacob swings a warhammer, Miassharra tumbles to attack and Cyan lobs fire.(can you say fiery death ;o)  We slay two, one runs and the leader Derral  gives up (Derral was in charge of this group and Jirraith is the elusive leader of the entire Pale Dogs).  They are the Pale Dogs, assassins hired by Dorral, for each 10gp up front, 40 gp more when the job is done.  We turn him into the Watch.  The woman is named Phon Quartermain and works at Saches a clothing store.  We walk her home and agree to see her at Saches tomorrow for her to return a favor to us.  She did rip off a piece of Derral's cloak and there was a note in it.  It gave Phon's address and a meeting place for tomorrow to collect the assassination fee.

The next day we visit Phon at Saches and she gives us clothing under 10 gp for free.  Cyan hints she may have had a jealous lover and so does Jacob but we get our point across badly.  Her boss Marta, an elderly woman, worries she’s having an affair because she never has money troubles and her co-workers suspect she’s pregnant.  Marta suggests we talk with Brother Fabitor.

Then, we head to see Brother Fabitor, who also suspects adultery.  Cyan hints at a possible relationship between Phon and the priest or someone from his church but Dar thinks the Priest is only genuinely concerned.

We then set off to case the warehouse but arouse suspicion.  We come back and Crow asks around about Phon.  We don’t get much and someone seems to be asking around about Crow.

At nightfall, we sneak into the warehouse.  Miassharra climbs and so does Dar but the elf up top hears Dar, so Mia pushes him over the ledge.  Jacob and Cyan charge in while Crow struggles and fails to follow by climbing.  Mia jumps onto the elf and puts him down and Dar jumps on the elf too.  Inside a bald human sends his dog to attack Jacob and Cyan and the human runs to Dar and Mia.  An woman archer jumps out to attack the party.  Mia tumbles out of the way and eventually outs down the woman as Dar finishes the human.  Crow finally breaks the door down and runs in after Jacob and Cyan finish the dog.  We shut the doors and stabilize the bald human.

In Between

Mia: we need to decide what to do with the bodies.  As much as I want to take all their loot - we just killed a bunch of people.  When the bodies are discovered in the morning we don't want it to look like we lured them here and killed them to rob them.  If we leave [most] everything valuable here, it will look more like a hit/revenge.  Since someone was asking about us, the criminals may suspect us either way.  Hiding the bodies is probably not feasible.

Cyan: since adultery is the theme, lets look from the opposite perspective. There is another woman involved here. The wife of the man that is sleeping with Phon. Perhaps there is a way to narrow down the search for her....and therefore find the man involved somehow

Cyan: also, perhaps confronting Phon with the issue of her pregnancy will force her to be more forthcoming about both the baby and the father of it

Mia: Question for the DM - are we going to pick up the next morning, or will the next adventure start several days later?

Crow: remember that we have Vaggar here ready for questioning. I assume Siggi isn't just going to show up, but Jacob is rather diplomatic, so perhaps he can get some information out of him? And Dar seems capable of discerning truth from lies. Once we figure out what to do with the bodies, I suggest we head to Brother Fabitor to see if he recognizes any of these names, or the vases. If not, then we spend a few hours investigating on our own. I forgot, did we get the name of the person who hired the assassins to kill Phon? Also, can't Jacob detect evil? Is Vaggar evil? As for the loot, if we want it to look like a hit, rather than stripping them, let's trade out our normal gear for their better gear. Take the gold (leave the silver and copper), ID papers, bows, ring, vases, potions , switch out the gear, leave the thieves' tools. Can we make it look like they killed each other?

Cyan: We could Crow but why bother with the bodies all that much? Basically we either killed some guys that 'deserved it' because of their underworld activities or we just slaughtered some random people that we happened to break into the warehouse and find. It would be better either way to probably turn ourselves in or at least summon the guard and let them know what happened. Hopefully it will be the 1st scenario; they deserved it and we have learned a lesson about finding out more info before acting. Mia could not be around when the guards show up if it might compromise her.

Cyan: In fact, for you less than honorable types, it may be worth your time to take their ID papers in case you need an alternate identity sometime in the future.

Mia: If we can get Vaggar conscious (magical healing), we can question him.  Taking him with us (unconscious) would be problematic.  Also, we don't want to hang around the warehouse too long.  After the initial adrenaline rush wears off, Mia is starting to get really nervous about the fact that they just killed some people.

Cyan: Ok. I can heal him with a spell but is that something that needs to be done in game or can we accomplish that and the questioning out of game and just start the action when we show up at the table?

Crow: I've still got the scrap of paper listing Phon's description and the warehouse location, so if we call the guard, we can at least prove that we believed we found the perpetrators. Crow would very much like to question Vaggar, even if that means risking being discovered. He's our best lead. Agreed that it might be best if Mia leaves soon.

DM: Mia, the start of the next adventure will depend upon the outcome of this discussion. It can either start at the warehouse, the next morning, a couple days later, or anything in between. Cyan, I'm willing to do some of the role-play over the wiki in between sessions, as long as it remains pretty simple; I don't want PCs that are online less to feel left out.

Mia: Cyan, let get this guy awake and question him (make sure to keep the noise down).  Dar and I can keep watch (low-light vision).  Jakob can do the questioning.  Cyan and Crow can loot the bodies - but you might want to hear Vaggar's answer first.

DM: Vagger is at -4hp. So you will need to magically heal him (either via potion or spell) for 4hp or wait 2 days for him to heal naturely.

Cyan: Ok I will send some Cure Light wounds at him, via spell, and let the Pally have at him in interrogation mode.

DM: Vagger comes to. Slightly out of it but concious and able to talk (he is disabled, assuming 1 cure light wounds spell).

Cyan: Cyan will commence with the looting, even though he isn't terribly interested in that portion of adventuring but he understands thereality of it. Staying alive costs money and adventurers or delvers get what they can, when they can. He still isn't sure these guys were legitimately killed. But he will go about his business of replacing some items with better ones. He will stop short of putting armor on the dead bodies though. He will throw it over the bodies to cover them if need be. People will have to claim what they want I guess. Cyan will personally take the potions and the ID papers.

Jacob walks over to Vagger and looks down at him with contempt.  He speaks to Vagger, "Are you the deviants who tried to have Phon, a simple seamstress, killed last night?"

Crow: Remembering the fiasco that resulted when he tried to bluff his way into the warehouse, Crow lets Jacob do the talking. But he watches Vagger closely during the interrogation, watching for any signs that he may be lying or holding back the full story.

DM: Vagger coughs and breaths heavily for a moment before replying, "Who, in the Nine Hells, do you think you are?" He examines Jacob closer. "Well, well, a Knight perhaps? Surprising..." He again coughs, this time a spray of red. "You always kill before asking your questions?" His laughter ends in a fit of coughing.

Cyan: Cyan will stand up from recovering items from one of the bodies, step closer to Vagger and say very pleasanty, " A simple yes or no would suffice." The look of the 7' tall Litorian behind a mask with a bird of prey on his shoulder dripping bloody chunks of his dead comrad's flesh might make Vagger pale slightly. Or make him laugh.

DM: Vagger's eyes drift from Jacob's bloodied warhammer to the tall, masked Litorian. His smirk turns to a frown. "I suppose this information will spare my life?"

Jacob puts his hand over his heart and raises his voice so everyone can hear. "You have my word, as a knight of the church.  I will spare your life, if you provide us with the information we need."  Jacob then leans in close and whispers to Vagger," ...though I would be truthful and forthcoming, sir, because if I do not like what I hear..."  He pauses, looking directly into Vagger's eyes.  "Well, let me ask you: What good is your life with broken kneecaps? "

Cyan raises his eyebrows at that last statement from the so called Knight, though no one can see because of his stoic mask face. He chuckles and says, "Beside the gut and the genitals,  the kneecap is the most painful place to suffer a terrible wound." He pauses for effect and continues almost reluctantly, "I suggest you tell this man the truth. It will no doubt be much less painful that way."

DM: Vagger's defiance melts away. "I work for a new crime boss, name's Toridan Cran. He paid me 200 thrones to see Quartermain dead but..." more coughing, "didn't want me to do it myself. So I hired some thugs from the Warrens to do it for me." Vagger grins widely, "Of course we weren't actually going to pay them. Perhaps I should thank you boys. Did us a favor and killed them Pale Dogs for us did ya?." Again a roar of laughter. [Crow, Jacob, and Cyan: as far as you can tell he is speaking the truth (I rolled Sense Motive for each of you).]

Jacob nods and looks at each of his companions (and to the empty space to his immediate left).  "Methinks he has spoken truthfully."  He looks back down at Vagger, "There may be hope for you yet, cretin.  Tell me, where may we find this Toridan Cran?"

DM: Beads of sweat dot Vagger's hairless head. "He is on Nar Street, southern Midtown in a small one-story wooden house." Vagger looks around nervously. "And if you mention my name you might as well kill me now."

Jacob smiles, "I swore to spare your life, if you provided us with the information we need.  You need not worry about Toridan.  However, I believe the city watch will take a keen interest in you and your activities very shortly..."  Jacob hauls Vagger up by the front of his shirt and says to his companions, "Let's take this garbage to this authorities.  They will know how to handle him."

Cyan: Cyan will assist the Knight if he needs help in escorting our friend to the nearest guard station, though he already has pocketed the man's ID along with the other's ID. he figures the IDs may be of som euse in the future perhaps. He will speak uyp and ask a question of his own, "How large of an area does Toridan control? Is he the so-called ward leader?"

Crow: A bit relieved that the party did indeed attack the right people, Crow loots the bodies. "They won't be needing their gear where they're headed. And I have a feeling we'll be glad of the upgrade before this is all over." He also carefully wraps the vases in his traveling cloak. When he's finished he also has questions for Vagger. "What does Cran look like? What do you know of his skills? Allies? Defenses? And what of his interest in Ms. Quartermain?"
